DAMA IA November Chapter Presentation – The Pandemic’s Effect on the U.S. Economy
When: Tuesday, November 8th, 2022 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm CST
Presentation Description:
Join DAMA Iowa in welcoming back speaker Michael Scofield as he covers the effect of the Pandemic on the US Economy.
Most data management careers serve larger, stable enterprises which are slowly changing. Before 2020, companies generally evolved slowly as markets for their goods and services change. With technology, the pace of change for many segments is increasing. But rarely is there a catastrophic event which changes nearly every aspect of the U.S. economy (Pearl Harbor was one).
The Covid-19 pandemic and the resultant fear and public health measures was a major trauma to the world economy and how businesses operate. In the U.S. many small businesses failed abruptly. Demand for a whole range of new goods and services emerged faster than vendors could respond. The labor market lost both jobs and people willing to work. Supply chains were disrupted.
In this presentation, we will look at a host of charts showing significant metrics of that change. Whole industries lost 85% of their revenue. Business relationships (especially consumer-facing processes) were often altered. And we are not back to “normal” yet!
Michael Scofield, M.B.A. is an Assistant Professor at Loma Linda University. He is a frequent speaker and author in topics of data management, data quality, data visualization, and data warehousing. He has spoken over 310 times to professional audiences in over 27 states, Canada, Australia, and the U.K., including 24 DAMA chapters. He also guest lectures at several universities.
His career experience includes some time with a CPA firm, developing an accounting and general ledger system for a major California bank, as well as experience in government, manufacturing, finance, and software development. Now semi-retired, he still does pro bono data mining and data quality analysis for non-profit organizations. His greatest interest currently is data visualization, data quality assessment, and using graphic techniques to reveal business and economic behavior.
