    PRESENTATION LINK:
Data Security in the Digital Age

    DESCRIPTION:
Hackers are focused on stealing data now that they have found ways to monetize it. Recent attacks have shown they are creating targeted attacks against organizations and their employees including spear phishing and ransomware. This presentation will look these new threats and how they work. We will discuss a couple of examples of targeted threats. We will also discuss methods (both technical and employee training) to mitigate data loss under this new threat environment.

    PRESENTER:

Doug Jacobson is a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Iowa State University and currently holds the rank of University Professor. Dr. Jacobson joined the faculty in 1985. Dr. Jacobson’s current funded research is targeted at developing robust countermeasures for network-based security exploits and large scale attack simulation environments. He is director of the Internet-Scale Event and Attack Generation Environment (ISEAGE) test bed project. Dr. Jacobson has given over 150 presentations in the area of computer security and has testified in front of the U.S. Senate committee of the Judiciary on security issues associated with peer-to-peer networking. Whos Modeling Data in Agile Anyway?

    8:30AM - 11:30AMNationwide Insurance, 1100 Locust St, Des Moines, IA 50309

    DESCRIPTION:
Agile and data. Sounds a lot like peanut butter and sardines, right? Ugh! Successful projects require an understanding, and analysis of multiple models including scope, process, interface, interaction and data, regardless of your approach; Waterfall, Agile, Wagile, Scrummerfall etc. The better the modeling, the better the chance of implementing a successful project. However, when it comes to Agile, I often see a lot of people running for the hills pretending everyone knows exactly what the data is used for leaving the developers to fend for themselves. Given the speed of Agile we need to look at modeling our data differently. In this dynamic and interactive workshop, you will learn and practice modern, tool agnostic, Agile approaches to capturing and modeling data

    Demystifying Cloud Data Warehousing

    8:30AM - 11:30AMPrincipal Financial Group, 750 Park St, Des Moines, IA 50392

    DESCRIPTION:
We all know that data warehouses and best practices for them are changing dramatically today. As organizations build new data warehouses and modernize established ones, they are turning to cloud data warehousing in hopes of taking advantage of the performance, concurrency, simplicity, and lower cost of the cloud or simply to reduce their data center footprint (and the maintenance that goes with that). But what is a Cloud Data Warehouse really? How is it different from traditional on-premises data warehousing and big data platforms?

In this talk to be discussed:
    • Demystify cloud data warehousing by defining it and its goals
    • Discuss the real-world benefits of cloud-native data warehousing
    • Discuss some of the coolest features as exemplified by the Snowflake Elastic Data Warehouse
    • Discuss the real-world benefits of a solution like Snowflake
    • Discuss some of the differences between Snowflake and other cloud data warehouse options

    PRESENTER:
    . Kent Graziano

Kent Graziano is a Senior Technical Evangelist for Snowflake Computing and an award winning author, speaker, and trainer, in the areas of data modeling, data architecture, and data warehousing. He is an Oracle ACE Director, member of the OakTable Network and DAMA-I, a certified Data Vault Master and Data Vault 2.0 Practitioner (CDVP2), expert data modeler and solution architect with more than 30 years of experience, including over two decades doing data warehousing and business intelligence (in multiple industries). He is an internationally recognized expert in Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler and Agile Data Warehousing. Data Modeling for NoSQL DBMS

    8:30AM - 11:30AMPrincipal Financial Group, 711 High St, Des Moines, IA 50392

    DESCRIPTION:

We have heard the business case and related modern technology oriented justifications for adopting NoSQL DBMS solutions in support of data driven business transformation.   Now comes the hard part.  Now that we’ve agreed we need to make the move, we need to identify the architectural technological implications facing the folks that have to build and maintain this new mission critical platform.   As the leader in Data Modeling, we have identified a critical success factor facing the majority of organizations adopting a document database like MongoDB.  Successfully deploying this solution requires a significant paradigm shift in how we design NoSQL data structures and deploy the databases that manage them.

Traditional database design has been focused on normalization and a storage optimized model.  This was driven by the technological playing field of the day and the belief that normalization and the resulting referential integrity it provided was paramount.   However, when we look at the new data use cases, the new development technologies and techniques available and the DBMS capabilities and behaviors they demand, the deck has been shuffled with regards to the goals and priorities of database design.

Demands for real-time access and analysis drive the demand for real time performance.  From a design perspective, query performance is now king.  We have the new platforms and technologies to handle the risks of de-normalization and we can now embrace it in pursuit of simplified querying and high- performance response.

In this session, we will cover how data modeling can guide you through this paradigm shift and take the pain out of transforming your approach to modern database design.  The session will include:

    • Problem Definition and Context
    • Resulting Pain Points
    • Adopting a query optimized design approach
    • Critical Use Case: Transforming legacy database applications/schema into high performance NoSQL databases
    • How Data Modeling Helps
